Optimum Nutrition, Health, & Longevity

If you want to improve either the health or the lifespan of your dog, you’re definitely not alone. Here we’ll explore methods on how to make your dog live longer. Every day, hundreds of thousands of pet owners search the web for answers to questions like:

  • What can I do to keep my dog healthier?
  • What should I be feeding my pet?
  • Why don’t our canines live longer than they do?

Answers to these questions are abundantly available; however, they can be misleading, influenced by bias, and sometimes downright untruthful. Over the years, I have tried my best to discern the difference between all of the hype and the truth. I have been able to do so by:

  • Listening to those with the most experience
  • Observing personal dogs and those in my care
  • Studying as much current science as possible
  • And, applying a lot of good old fashion common sense

Have you ever wondered why there can often be obvious differences between a dog or cat’s chronological age and its biological age? For example, some pets seem to age faster than their calendar years while others remain youthful and more energetic far into senior life.  My Answer: It is a well established fact that remaining active and eating healthy can dramatically increase life expectancy and help to push back normal age-related diseases.

Do you know why some pets are always sick and require multiple visits to the veterinarian while others remain quite healthy throughout life?  My Answer: Most pets are capable of amazing powers of self-healing & recovery that can provide the key to make you dog live longer. The three things that provide these powers are Genetics, the environment an animal lives in, and the kind of nutrition it is provided. These are the keys to optimum health, well-being, and longevity.

Humans have been making poor decisions concerning their health for as long as I can remember. Just look at what sugar and corn syrup have done for us!  Likewise, we have made similar mistakes with our pet’s health. For example, we have seen what feeding low levels of poor quality protein and the abundant overuse of carbohydrates like corn, wheat and rice have done for the health of our dogs and cats.

Dying of old age is a actually a rarity in our pets today.  Modern veterinary medicine has done much to eliminate early pet death due to infections, disease or trauma. What our pets are succumbing to are the chronic degenerative diseases such as cancer, liver, kidney and heart failure, diabetes, and arthritis.

If we could proactively defend our pets against these chronic, degenerative diseases, we could give them a longer, healthier and happier life.  I have been a veterinarian for 40 years now. During that time I have studied and practiced the scientific principles of disease prevention and longevity in both humans and animals.  Living longer and healthier is simply a matter of adhering to the principles of proper genetics, environment, and nutrition.

The Importance of Optimum Nutrition

Pet foods should be based on a dog’s digestive anatomy and physiology, not what is cheap and convenient. Remember, our pet’s ancestors naturally selected food sources over time that allowed them to remain strong, alert and as healthy as possible. Shouldn’t we be doing the same for our domesticated pets? Without a good understanding of the problems that face our pets, we will undoubtedly continue down the path of making the same judgment errors we have made in the past concerning the health of both ourselves and our pets.
